* You need to first determine what size battery fits your hearing aid. The most common hearing aid battery sizes are 10, 13, 312 and 675. There's a new size 5, which is the smallest battery for completely inside the canal (CIC) hearing ais. A color coding scheme is used to help identify the sizes and is located on the zinc tabs as well as the packaging. The color codes are: yellow for size 10, brown for size 312, orange for size 13, blue for size 675 and red for size 5.
* The shelf life of hearing aid batteries depends on the hearing aid amplification type. It also depends upon how long you use them. You should inquire with your hearing care professional on the expected life span of each battery.
* Make sure batteries are stored in good condition. Room temperature is best as extreme hot or cold will shorten the battery life. Keep unused batteries in a battery holder or in its packaging. Consult the packaging on how to dispose of fully discharged batteries..
* Don't remove the tab on the battery until you're actually ready to use it. A zinc battery uses outside air as its source of power. The tab ensures the battery freshness.
* Keep the hearing aid well ventilated at night.
* Always keep spare batteries on hand just in case.
* If you have difficulty hearing in noisy place or notice your battery runs out faster than expected, ask your hearing aid specialist if high power zinc batteries will work in your hearing aid.
