Previously, behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aids were the most popular examples available to people with hearing loss. In a BTE hearing aid, all of the electronic parts are put inside of a small plastic case. The case stays behind the individual’s ear and is connected to an ear-piece by a piece of clear tubing.
When behind-the-ear hearing aids were popular, people who were hard of hearing didn’t have many options. BTE hearing aids may have been cumbersome and uncomfortable but it was able to help people hear and function normally.
Behind-the-ear hearing aids are not as popular today because of technology advancements. However, for young children behind-the-ear hearing aids are still used today. This type of hearing aid is chosen for children because it is a safer hearing device, doesn’t interfere with their growth and is more economical. If choosing other hearing aids, a child would require a new hearing aid frequently as their body grew along with their ear canal.
Behind-the-ear hearing aids gave technician a great hearing device to work with and learn from. It was the BTE hearing aid that proved to technicians that ear molds could be modified to better suit people with hearing loss. It was also discovered that different size vents could be used in an ear mold to decrease the low frequency response of a hearing aid while making the hearing aid more comfortable for the user.
Nowadays people with hearing problems are more likely to buy a hearing aid model that is less obvious and more comfortable. New hearing aid models offer many helpful features, features that were not available in behind-the-ear hearing aids. Although this model of hearing aid is less popular in today’s society, it has helped with enhancing hearing aid technology and thus producing more effective and more comfortable hearing aids for individuals today. It’s not often that you’ll see people wearing behind-the-ear hearing aids nowadays but when learning how these older models have helped, they are likely to appreciate behind-the-ear hearing aids.
